RAYMOND, MAINE - The Gander Brook Christian Camp family is mourning the death of Cecil D. Perkins, a beloved figure to generations of campers.

Perkins, 58, died Jan. 9.

A junior high science teacher in Memphis, Tenn., Perkins began volunteering in 1973 and served as a counselor, waterfront director and bus driver at the camp, returning almost every summer.

“Over the last 38 years, there have only been two or three years that Cecil wasn’t able to attend and offer his services to the young people of the Northeast,” camp director Shawn Daggett said. “Cecil’s presence, personality, example and generosity have been so influential to Gander Brook that it is impossible to speak of one without thinking of the other.”

Perkins’ home congregation, the White Station Church of Christ in Memphis, hosted a memorial service.

Cecil was one of my good friends. I too taught science in Memphis City Schools and he was always at most of our inservice programs. He was a loving, gentle, and kind soul. He will be sorely missed in the teaching community.
