OWIA, ST. VINCENT - After 50 years of mission work, Walter Hackshaw is retiring.
Hackshaw serves as a missionary on this small, mountainous island in the Caribbean, a former British colony and now part of the nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Members of the missionary’s supporting congregation, the East Cobb church in Marietta, Ga., traveled to St. Vincent recently to conduct their eighth annual Vacation Bible School.
The church members and the Owia congregation also hosted an island-wide meeting. East Cobb elders Jim Tidwell and David Sherrod and senior minister Ray Hawkins conducted Bible classes, led worship and hosted a retirement party for Hackshaw. Mark Charles, the new minister for the Owia church, assisted.
The East Cobb church plans to send Alson Pipe, educated at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., to St. Vincent this month to establish a new congregation on the island with full support from East Cobb.
Ancel Buchannan, a deacon of the Georgia church, oversees the mission efforts.
“Future preaching students are scheduled to come to the States, get educated and return as native preaching missionaries,” East Cobb member Lisa Petty said.
