Bixler, missionary to Navajos, dies at 92

Omar Bixler, known for his passion for singing, missions and family, died May 22 in Searcy, Ark. He was 92.

He preached and led singing at churches across Texas and Colorado with his father, C. Roy Bixler, his uncle Fred Conner and Jesse P. Sewell.

He was raised in Kansas City, Kan., and attended Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas. He married classmate Mildred Harp in 1938 and the couple helped start the church in Cortez, Colo. The couple also helped the young church in Grand Junction, Colo.

In the 1970s he and his wife began spending two weeks each summer assisting vacation Bible schools on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. In 1975 they moved to Fort Defiance, Ariz., to work with American Indian churches. The couple moved to Searcy in 1989, and

Omar Bixler continued to support and promote mission work among the Navajo until his death.

Survivors include his wife, three sons, two daughters, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a sister.
