Michael Bingham, a former inmate, is studying to become a preacher. Bingham is a student at Sunset International Bible Institute. “Mike is not afraid to tell you what he used to be, but he can also tell you why he’s not that anymore,” Sunset President Truitt Adair tells a Lubbock television station.

ACU marks 50th anniversary of enrollment of first black student

On the Monday that marked the 50th anniversary of the end of Abilene Christian College’s 56 years of segregation, African-American faculty member Jerry Taylor was cheered by audience members after a chapel speech that touched on reconciliation between races.

Texas church collects teddy bears for wildfire victims

Over the past four weeks, a Texas congregation has collected teddy bears for wildfire victims.
More than 500 teddy bears from the Bears for Bastrop drive were taken to Bastrop on Oct. 7, a newspaper reported.

Historical marker dedicated at ACU’s original site

An official Texas historical marker was unveiled Friday at the original campus of the school that eventually became Abilene Christian University in Texas. It opened with 25 students on Sept. 11, 1906, as Childers Classical Institute, an elementary and secondary school.

Texas member, homeless advocate dies in motorcycle accident

Judge Rusty Ladd, an advocate who worked with homeless people through Carpenter’s Church, a ministry of the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas, died in a motorcycle accident Friday.
