Harding, Lipscomb report all-time record enrollments (updated)

Fall enrollment figures at colleges and universities associated with Churches of Christ are starting to trickle in to The Christian Chronicle. Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., both report record numbers of students. Abilene Christian University in Texas reports about 100 fewer students than last year’s record of 4,838 but has a record graduate enrollment and touts the academic prowess of its freshman class. We’ll update readers on enrollment trends at other Christian universities as those numbers become available.

Nashville-area church hosts World Vision Experience: AIDS

The Otter Creek Church of Christ in Brentwood, Tenn., is hosting “World Vision Experience: AIDS.” The World Vision Web site notes: “The World Vision Experience: AIDS is a 2,500 square foot interactive exhibit that invites visitors to ‘step into Africa’ by hearing, seeing and walking through an African village to personally experience the lives of children affected by AIDS. The stirring audio tour and captivating photography will transport you into the life of an African child and give you a new perspective on the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time … AIDS.”

Lipscomb University mourns death of freshman (updated)

From Lipscomb University:
Lipscomb student Liz LaVelle, a 2009-2010 freshman from Germantown, Tenn., was killed in an auto accident as she was traveling to Nashville from the Memphis area on Wednesday.
LaVelle, 20, a 2009 graduate of Memphis’ Harding Academy, is the daughter of David and Jenny LaVelle of Germantown, Tenn.
The funeral will be held Saturday, July 31, at 4 p.m. at Harding Academy, 1100 Cherry Road in Memphis.  Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Harding Academy.

Auburn grad anchors nightly news, preaches on weekends

Chase Gallimore has a made-for-TV name. That’s appropriate, too, given his day job — er, night job. Gallimore, 27, anchors the weeknight news for KAVU-TV in Victoria, Texas, which is known locally as ABC 25. But on weekends, he steps behind the pulpit of the College Church of Christ, where he serves as the preacher.

‘Teenagers today are ready to help the world’

Teenagers who heard a lesson Sunday at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., on finding ways to serve their communities were not satisfied just to listen. More than 200 students began to coordinate an effort to serve Searcy and their own hometowns.

Lipscomb recruiting volunteers for flood relief

Lipscomb University is recruiting volunteers to help with Nashville, Tenn., area flood relief this weekend. The university, already serving as a Red Cross emergency shelter for flood victims, announced Wednesday that it will partner with a nonprofit disaster relief organization and several Nashville churches to help clean flood-damaged homes.

Red Cross opens emergency shelter at Lipscomb

Amid major flooding in the Nashville, Tenn., area, the Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at Lipscomb University. The Associated Press interviewed a flooding victim staying at the Lipscomb shelter.
