Crusade for Christ in Washington, D.C., goes on despite Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene forced the cancelation of church services across the region. But at the Washington, D.C., Hilton, hundreds of people came together to worship during the Crusade for Christ. Organizers said about 2,000 people were scheduled to come to D.C. for five days of door knocking and revivals.

Arkansas church feeds the hungry

Those who walk into the SAME Cafe in Searcy, Ark., get a belly-warming meal and soul-warming fellowship. The cafe, a ministry of the West Side Church of Christ in Searcy, provides a free hot meal to anyone who walks through the doors. The church is at 709 W. Arch Ave.

Singing, and sweating, in steamy West Virginia

I traveled to Parkersburg, W.Va., an industrial, working-class city on the Ohio River, to cover the “Christ Is The Answer” campaign. The joint effort of area Churches of Christ involved knocking more than 24,000 doors. About 200 local and out-of-town church members participated in the outreach effort, which resulted in a number of Bible studies and more than a dozen baptisms. Roughly 1,000 people attended each night, most of them fanning themselves to try to stay cool.

Washers, dryers and a coin-friendly way to share Christ

Sometimes, sharing Jesus can be as simple as offering a Coke and a smile — or pulling a quarter out of your pocket at the Laundromat. The Eastside Church of Christ has started a Laundromat ministry, giving quarters to people to help pay for washing and drying their dirty clothes. “We have found it found more effective than we imagined,” a minister says.

Old-school door knocking in Oklahoma City

I spent the afternoon watching some old-school door knocking evangelism in northwestern Oklahoma City. Well, not everything about it was old school. While groups of believers went two-by-two to spread the Gospel in an apartment complex, their team leader, Brad Vaughan, got a one-word text message — “baptism.” Vaughan, who lives in Perry, Kan., traveled to the Sooner state to help members of the Cherokee Hills Church of Christ in a weeklong “Back to the Bible” campaign. About 70 volunteers came to Oklahoma City, many of them from the Northwest Church of Christ in Lawton, Okla.
