‘Hatfields & McCoys’: Real historical ties to Churches of Christ?

At Lipscomb, Geena Davis battles media’s portrayal of women

The Tennessean reports:
Fighting gender stereotypes in today’s culture is an uphill battle for parents of young children, Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis told a Nashville audience on Thursday.
Davis spoke at Lipscomb University to raise awareness about the portrayal of women and girls in the media.
Former FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate introduced Davis by saying that at the rate the United States is adding women to Congress, it will take 500 years to receive equality.

Secret Sisters singing duo — Church of Christ members — break out on ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack

Rolling Stone reports on the Secret Sisters, a duo who got their start singing a cappella in church and still can be found in the pews of the North Carolina Church of Christ in Killen, Ala. The bluegrass duo’s haunting ballad “Tomorrow Will Be Kinder” is included on the soundtrack for “The Hunger Games.”

‘I’m leaving with dignity’: Minister withdraws from Oprah show contest

Tony Roach, minister of the Minda Street Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas, has withdrawn as a candidate to host a new reality show on Oprah Winfrey’s new OWN television network. Near the end of the fourth episode of “Your OWN Show,” Roach told co-hosts Nancy O’Dell and Carson Kressley that he was withdrawing. “I chose to leave the competition,” Roach said during the episode. “I cannot say I’m going to help somebody live their best life, and then tear people down. To me, that’s not a winner. I’m leaving with dignity. I’m leaving with respect.”

York College alumnus gets ‘American Idol’ golden ticket to Hollywood

A York College alumnus appeared on Wednesday night’s season premiere of “American Idol” and received a golden ticket to Hollywood.
Or, as York’s website described it:
Caleb Hawley Rocks Out with Steven Tyler
If that last name sounds familiar, Hawley is the grandson of Monroe Hawley, a prominent Church of Christ preacher featured in a 2007 Christian Chronicle interview.
