Updated with video: John deSteiguer named sixth president of Oklahoma Christian University

John deSteiguer, senior vice president for advancement at Oklahoma Christian University, will move into the president’s office this summer. Trustees for the 2,200-student Christian university chose deSteiguer today to succeed retiring President Mike O’Neal, who announced plans in 2010 to step down at the end of this academic year.

In the ‘sex tourism capital of the world,’ Christian fights child prostitution

Online now is a web-exclusive story about Tawee Donchai, a Christian in Thailand. Donchai, a member of Cheung Doi Church of Christ in Chiang Mai and a scientist researching HIV, grew up in the village of Chiang Rai, an impoverished community that has one of the highest rates of child prostitution in the country.

Video: Church members sing Oklahoma City’s praises

Addi Panter and Erick Alexander, members of the Memorial Road Church of Christ in Edmond, Okla., sing about the past year in Oklahoma City. The video was produced by Boiling Point Media for the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. Panter and her twin sister, Jala Verner, competed in the Country Music Television reality show “Can You Duet?” in 2008.

Photos: Relief and big smiles in Kenya’s dry and thirsty land

We made a brief trip to the town of Lodwar in Kenya’s northwest region known as Turkana. The region, like much of East Africa, was hit hard by a recent drought and famine. Much of the media attention has centered on the Dadaab refugee camp near Kenya’s border with Somalia, but other communities, including those in Turkana, also have suffered greatly in recent months. We delivered some food to villagers in a place called Nablon, which has endured a severe drought for the past three years.

Danny Dodd, former minister with the Gateway Church of Christ in Pensacola, Fla., alerted me to this video. It’s “a great story at Gateway about an elder’s wife who got a new kidney from a good lady in that church,” Dodd said.

ACU bus crash victim’s faith praised during memorial service

Anabel Reid’s boyfriend told an audience of nearly 1,400 mourning his fellow Abilene Christian University classmate of his love for a “totally righteous babe of the Lord.” Reid’s devotion to God was why Wann and a handful of other mourners from Broadway Church of Christ said they were happy knowing Reid was in heaven.

Greg Clodfelter was in Oklahoma City recently for the Quest lectureship at Oklahoma Christian University. He’s on a fundraising trip in the U.S. through Thanksgiving with his wife of eight months, Sonia. I got to have lunch with the newlyweds while they were in town and catch up on their unique ministry in East Africa — battling the AIDS pandemic one child at a time.
