Updated: Pioneering missionary Maxine Timmerman dies

Maxine Timmerman, a pioneering missionary to the French-speaking world, died Feb. 6 at a nursing home in Searcy, Ark.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Feb. 11, at the College Church of Christ, 712 E. Race Street, in Searcy, Ark. Visitation is at the church building from 10 to 11 a.m. with the funeral following at 11. Burial will be at White County Memorial Gardens in Searcy.
Timmerman and her husband, Samuel “S.F.” Timmerman, moved to Belgium in 1948 to serve as the first missionaries there for Churches of Christ. The couple spent 16 years in the European nation, focusing on the French-speaking region of the country, and helped plant churches in Verviers, Liege and Brussels.
Later the couple served in the Canadian province of Quebec, working with French-speaking churches there.
S.F. Timmerman died Dec. 28, 2009. (See his obituary and a story about the 2008 French World Mission Workshop in Colorado, where he was a featured speaker.)

We are saddened by Maxine’s passing but rejoice that she is with SF receiving her richly deserved reward.

My feelings are so mixed. Like Jim said, I’m sad that we can’t see her again on this earth, but rejoicing to think of her being with the Lord and her beloved soulmate, S.F. They were my “adopted” parents since their daughter, Fannie Sue, and I roomed together at Harding. My love, thoughts and sympathy to family members and friends. You’re in my prayers.
I did not know both of them personally in this World, but I look forward to seeing them one day in heaven. May they rest in peace.
We were saddened to hear of, first, SF’s passing and nowof Maxine’s. They were our friends & tutors when we first moved to Canada. They taught us about missions, dedication, and working in French and in the Quebec culture. Both scholarly in the Bible, yet remaining humble servants of the Lord, they were indeed our role models. Our deepest regrets to their loving family. They will be missed here, but certainly be warmly welcomed in heaven!

We loved both SF and Maxine and consider them as extended family. We know where she is and that her suffering is no more. We love all of you.
The Timmermans were heroes around our home, as well as other missionaries like J.C. Bailey and Joe Cannon. I worked for their son for a short time, while I was in college.
I’m so sorry to hear about Maxine. My deepest sympathy for Fannie, Carol and Rick. I will always have fond memories of your mother.
Thanks for writing this blog Erik. My best friend, Teresa Castleman, is Mrs. Timmerman’s granddaughter. Teresa is also a ‘pioneer missionary’ in America. My sympathy to the family.
We loved Maxine and S. F. deeply. They have meant much to us and to our extended family. They opened their home to Duyane and family when they were forced to leave France. We loved them even more because of the love they showed to many dear friends. The Lord blessed our lives through them
They will be sorely missed in the French work which owes much to their planting. Love to Fannie, Carol and Ricky.
I praise God for having known Maxine over here in France and in Belgium.
She and S.F. were such a great influence in my life ! They will never be forgotten by all of us in the Lord’s work.

I’m sorry to hear about the death of Maxine,I briefly worshiped together with late SF, in Welland Church ON. During my stay in Beamsville before they moved back to the States. May the Lord rest her soul in Eternal home.
So sorry to read this news. Mrs. Timmerman was my longtime piano teacher in Montreal many years ago. She was very special to me and even though I have not seen her since she and her husband left Montreal, she was often in my thoughts. May God bless her and her family, condolences to all (especially Lorna, who I remember as a child in Lachine).
