The Galveston Daily News in Texas reports:

GALVESTON — The pulpit was simple and plain. The sound system had yet to be installed, and the walls of Broadway Church of Christ were bare.

But the pews were full and smiles abound as members of the 50-plus-year-old church returned to their house of worship for the first time since Hurricane Ike flooded the building two years ago.

Read the full story (be warned that the paper refers to the minister as “the Rev.” and “pastor”). The above video features singing and a baptism from Sunday’s service. A reopening celebration is planned for 11 a.m. Sept. 19.

In November 2008, The Christian Chronicle featured the Broadway church in a Page 1 story about Hurricane Ike.

Thanks for sharing this story of renewal. Galveston was our home in the early 70′s while my husband served with the Coast Guard. We attended church services at the Broadway Church of Christ and had been wondering how the church was doing in the rebuilding process. It touched my heart to see and read about the Winters family that had been so nice to us in our early years and how their family history still goes on with the baptism of their grandson. It was also special to hear of the specialness of the communion table being spared. Baptism and communion were both so intregal to the church and it is good to see that it still is.
