Martin was driving back into Terrell early Sunday morning. “I could see the flames in the air,” she said.
SWCC student Paris Washington had just gone to bed when a friend banged on the door, telling her to look out her window.
“At that time it was just a small fire on the left side of the building and in the back,” Washington said.
But within a few minutes, the flames spread at the building located at 200 Bowser St.
Firefighters began battling the blaze about 2 a.m. Sunday and continued extinguishing hot spots through Monday.
“At this point we don't know what caused the fire,” said Terrell Fire Chief Jim Harper.

As an alumni of SWCC ('83) this truly is heart breaking news, but I truly believe that out of the ashes a Phoenix will rise for an greater Southwestern Christian College. "God is able to do exceedingly abundantly..." Sugar Land Church of Christ - Sugar Land, TX ![]() |

As the current Mr. Southwestern Christian College, I urge you to send whatever donation you can afford to the school. This school is uniquely positioned to dramatically increase it's enrollment by appealing to potential "off-campus" students in the DFW area. Your donations will help rebuild what was lost in the fire. With the rebuilding will come the need to capitalize on these potential commuting students. I am confident that God will permit this tragedy to be something that in hindsight will be an overwhelming blessing! ![]() |
