Ministries discuss future of Cuba work

Rudy Wray
Churches of Christ that have worked independently on the island nation of Cuba are taking steps to unify their efforts. Herald of Truth has sponsored several gospel events in Cuba, and the ministry hosted a recent meeting in Nashville, Tenn., for ministries working on the island.

Represented at the meeting were Sunset International Bible Institute, World Christian Broadcasting, Healing Hands International, Christian Productions International, the Mayfair church in Huntsville, Ala., the East Tallasee church in Tallassee, Ala., the Central church in Sparta, Tenn., the Karnes church in Knoxville, Tenn. and the Sylvan Hills church in Sherwood, Ark.

Cuba is home to about 120 Churches of Christ with a combined membership of 4,000 to 5,000, said Rudy Wray, dean of ministry training for Pan America at Sunset in Lubbock, Texas. Meeting regularly will help American supporters of the work in Cuba share information and better serve Cuban believers, Wray said.

The group also talked about the future of ministry in Cuba in light of news reports about the failing health of Fidel Castro, the head of Cuba’s government since the 1959 revolution that brought him to power.

It’s difficult to know what — if any — changes will occur in Cuba after Castro’s death, Wray said. But he said members who support work on the island hope “to do what we can ... to help our brothers in Cuba in whatever situation they find themselves.”
