Fast facts: Canyon Church of Christ


LOCATION: Anthem, Ariz., about 35 miles north of downtown Phoenix.

PEOPLE: About 180 members, with average Sunday attendance of 165. Congregation is mostly white with some blacks, Hispanics,Nigerians, Cubans, Japanese and Navajos.

MINISTER: Tom Riley.

ELDERS: Jeff Andersen, Stephen Carman, Frank Hamilton, Don Morue and Jack Wilkerson.

FINANCES: Debt of $820,000 on land for a future building. Entering a capital campaign to raise $1.5 million to build the first phase.

VISION STATEMENT: "People woven together by the One who wore the crown of thorns: Praising! Loving! Reaching!"

MISSIONS: The congregation raised more than $14,000 recently to help send two members on a mission trip to Sudan. Members also are working to help start a church on the Navajo Reservation in Pinion, Ariz.

BAPTISMS: The church has baptized 34 new members since 2003. Members' swimming pools, hot tubs, an area lake and the Agua Fria River all have served as baptisteries for the congregation.

MINISTRIES: Along with typical ministries such as youth, missions and worship, the
church's Canyon Hikers mix outdoor activity with Christian fellowship.
