Small congregation hosts big clothing giveaway

Coats, blankets, warm shoes - The 13-member Huron, S.D., congregation recently outfitted hundreds of children and their parents with warm clothing during a giveaway so large that it had to be moved to a National Guard armory. Missionary Timmy Walker said tough economics in the area, a large immigrant population and early snowfall all contributed to a record-setting number of participants this year.

HURON, S.D. - With just 13 members, the Huron church may be small in number.
But it’s gigantic in heart.
The congregation’s recent two-day winter clothing giveaway helped 265 families, including 825 children, missionary Timmy Walker said.
In its third year, the most recent giveaway grew so large that it had to be moved from the church building to the National Guard armory, Walker said.
The unofficial motto: No child leaves un-coated, Walker said, noting that snow was falling as crowds arrived at the building.
Twelve Huron members, joined by a dozen fellow Christians from Colorado, Kentucky and Tennesee, distributed coats, hats, gloves, socks, jeans, hooded sweatshirts and blankets to children, many of whom are Hispanic and Hmong immigrants whose parents work at a turkey processing plant.
Donations came from Huron members as well as the Bolivar, Mo., church, the College Hill church in Fort Worth, Texas; the Parkway church in Fulton, Ky.; and several Tennessee congregations: the Lebanon church in Dresden, the Hatler’s Chapel church in Martin, the Liberty church in Gleason, the Martin church and the Woodson Chapel church in Nashville.
“I do not normally wish to bring attention to myself or the works we do, for they are for the glory of God,” said Walker, a graduate of Bear Valley Bible Institute of Denver, who has served in Huron for five years. “Yet this work is one that continues to touch all those who desire to bring the glory to God.”

We are involved with different projects helping and serving those in Honduras. Our ladies collect baby clothes, and adult T-shirts that we make hundreds of diapers from. We collect and assemble baby needs, put into diaper bags and send to the hospitals and others in need. We recently collected and assembled 100 filled back packs with needed school supplies for children that could not attend school without the needed supplies. We, also, provide enough vitamins for a year's supply for each child at Casa de Esperanza, a children's home in Santa Ana, Honduras.
