Gueston Pacius, stranded on his church building's roof for seven days, swam through murky water for food and help for the people he pulled up with him to safety.
GONAIVES, HAITI - Last year Gueston Pacius saved 37 people from rising floodwaters by ushering them onto the roof of his church’s building.
Stranded on the roof for more than seven days, the minister dove into the murky water and swam to find dry land — and food for the people he saved.
Now, months after the floodwaters have receded, the minister and his fellow church members continue to feed their neighbors through the Haiti Christian Development Project. Pacius serves as development director for the nonprofit, which seeks to help Haitians improve their own lives through agriculture and business training, preventative health care and micro-loans while teaching and practicing Christian ethics and principles.
The Haitian Christian Development Project operates a farm, which was covered with sediment by last year’s flood. The nonprofit recently acquired a tractor and used it to remove the sediment, making the farm usable as a training facility for area farmers.
A team of church members from Arkansas traveled to Gonaives on a recent medical mission and treated more than 1,500 patients.
