J. Hayden helps the Gillette, Wyo., church unload laundry detergent and other supplies Aug. 17 from a trailer for tornado victims in Wright, about 40 miles south. An Aug. 12 tornado in Wright killed two people and destroyed dozens of homes.

Gillette church members were considering how to help when they received an unexpected call from Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort with news that the Nashville, Tenn.-based ministry was sending help, the Gillette News-Record reported.

Ministry volunteers Charlie and Linda Markus of Burns, Tenn., arrived Aug. 17 with a semi-truck carrying nearly $72,000 worth of merchandise, including 396 “family boxes” with items such as Ramen noodles, toothpaste and bottled water.

“The Lord really opened the door for us to help a lot of people,” said minister Paul Kearby, whose 125-member congregation worked to distribute the boxes.
