Shawn Mitchell bests the scorching heat as he joins more than two dozen volunteers most from the Quail Springs church, Oklahoma City - in a building blitz July 23.
The project by the Rock Island House ministry near downtown Oklahoma City was part of a Rebuilding The Walls effort to reclaim a neighborhood beset with drugs, prostitution and crime.
Rock Island will be a safe place for neighborhood teens to receive prayer and hang out, ministry volunteer Dawn Shelton said. The teens will be able to play games, watch movies and get help with homework, computer skills and mentoring.
Although temperatures topped 102 degrees that weekend, the crew completed the walls to the house, Shelton said. Rock Island is expected to open by the end of the year.
